The Broker is a stock pitch competition for aspiring investment analysts currently enrolled in a Canadian undergraduate program. A gift card prize will be awarded to the first-place team, and they will have the opportunity to meet with some of the most experienced finance professionals in the country for a coffee chat!
The Broker is one of SMYL’s signature annual fundraising events and raises funds to support the SMYL Research Catalyst Fund — a special resource dedicated to advancing groundbreaking medical research being led by top scientists at St. Michael’s Hospital.

The Investment Memo
A single-page written memo open to all participants.
The Investment Committee Deck
A maximum 10-slide Powerpoint presentation expanding on your memo.
The Live Pitch
3 finalist teams present a 10 minute live presentation to a panel of judges.
Students can enter the competition individually or as a team of up to three people. You’ll select a healthcare investment from a list of 10 publicly traded companies based in North America.
The competition unfolds over three rounds, with the top teams advancing to the third, in-person round.
Participants who qualify for the third round of competition will pitch on Competition Day to a panel of judges made up of Bay Street leaders and veterans, with second round participants being invited to attend as audience members.
The winning team will have an opportunity to join coffee chats with some of the most experienced finance professionals in the city.
All funds raised will support world-leading medical research at St. Michael’s Hospital.
