What is Even the Odds?

Even the Odds is a partnership between Staples and MAP (St. Michael’s Hospital) to raise awareness of inequity in Canada and to help create vibrant, healthy communities. Through corporate donations and fundraising, Even the Odds funds research and innovative, evidence-based solutions across Canada - to help make the future fair for everyone. Even the Odds supports MAP’s research and evidence-based solutions across Canada.

MAP is Canada’s largest research centre focused on health equity and the social determinants of health. Internationally recognized for groundbreaking science and innovation, MAP develops and implements real-world, evidence-driven program and policy solutions that disrupt cycles of socioeconomic exclusion and poor health. For more than 25 years, MAP has partnered with communities and policy makers across the country to take on complex issues such as chronic homelessness, childhood health inequities and inequitable access to healthcare and disease prevention. What is Staples’ corporate contribution?

Since 2021, Staples Canada has partnered with MAP to raise awareness of inequity in Canada and to help create vibrant, healthy communities. We’re proud that this multi-year, multi-million-dollar commitment has raised more than $2 million each year to advance MAP’s groundbreaking research and programs through Staples internal and public awareness campaigns, in-store fundraising, associate volunteerism, an annual fundraising vendor golf tournament, as well as a dollar-for-dollar match of customer donations up to $500,000 each year.

How do I get started?

Fundraise My Way is designed so that you can raise funds for MAP and Even the Odds in the way that is most meaningful to you.

First, create an individual fundraising page to share why Even the Odds is important to you.

Remember, when people know why you are fundraising, they are more likely to support you!

Start your fundraiser today by completing a short registration form and personalizing your fundraising page with your story and photo. Once you register, you will be able to access sample emails in the Fundraiser Dashboard to start emailing family, friends and colleagues to support your fundraiser.

You can also create a team fundraising page and recruit others to fundraise with you.

What is a team fundraising page?

By starting a team fundraiser, you become a Team Captain and you can invite others to fundraise with you. Once you complete your registration, you can share the team fundraising page and invite others to create their own fundraising pages under the team page. They will have access to sample emails and fundraising ideas in the Fundraiser Dashboard to begin fundraising towards the team goal!

If you have registered as Team Captain, make sure you check in with your team and encourage them to fundraise by reaching out to their family and friends. A fun team name and friendly competition can help you successfully meet your team goal!

Do I need to customize my fundraising page?

Your fundraising page has been pre-loaded with a default image and text. Customized pages always have greater impact. Make your page extra special by writing a personal message about why you are committed to raising funds for Even the Odds.

Can funds raised through my fundraiser be used to pay for event expenses?

No. Once funds are received through the Fundraise My Way page, they are considered donations to MAP and may not be used to pay expenses.

What do I do with cash and cheque donations?

If you receive a cash or cheque donation, you can enter these ‘offline’ donations in your Participant Centre (look for the “Enter Offline Gift” button). You will also need to fill out the Offline Donation form and mail it to St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation.

Please include donation cheques, but if you receive cash donations, we request that you deposit the money and either make out a cheque or send a money order for that same amount to St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation. Once we receive all necessary information, a tax receipt can be issued to donor(s). Tax receipts will be issued for donations of $20 and above and in accordance with CRA guidelines.

How are tax receipts issued?

Tax receipts are issued automatically for online donations of $20 or more. For offline donations please follow the process above.

Can a tax receipt be issued for in-kind donations?

Some in-kind donations are eligible for tax receipts. We request you contact St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation to confirm whether an in-kind donation to your fundraiser is eligible for a tax receipt. Please contact: fundraise@stmichaelsfoundation.com or call 416-864-5000.

Can I use the Even the Odds logo for fundraising posters and other material related to my fundraiser?
